This photo comes at a good time. As it is the case with many things in life, the theory behind a social text and/or behavior is not always congruent with its actual manifestation in life. I explain, a theoretical discussion of gender generally and androgyny specifically is one thing but how a gendered expression of identity presents itself might be another.
Theory aside, I quite liked this Australia-based photo that sartorialist just posted.

I've always thought that one of the 'markers' of androgyny is the straight lines. Very apropos photo!
What do you attribute the presence of so many straight lines in current fashions? Is androgyny popular because of clothing style or is more visible now because gender discourse is more readily seen these days?
Very few people can pull off androgyny. I attribute it not only to the ability to translate an idea into clothing styles but also the knowledge one needs to have of the whole text of androgyny....
I do tend to associate straight lines with androgyny as well. And as you say, B., androgyny is more readily seen these days because it seems to be perceived as 'now.'
And if there's one thing that is true about about things that are 'now,' it's that they make 'texts' visible, ergo relevant.
The translation of androgyny into clothing styles is almost as much an art as anything.
I'm reminded of some line early in Virginia Woolf's Orlando, where Orlando's androgyny is described as being fashionable for the day. Back when I read the book, I don't think androgyny was as popular as it is today, and I remember thinking that line odd, but now it makes more sense.
