New Videocast: The Third Gender Model in the Middle Ages

Well, no amount of the cold or flu could be great enough to keep one from recording an episode on the Middle Ages. In this episode, which is now also available on iTunes under the series: De Amore: On Love, I talk about my research on Hildegard von Bingen and her new gender model.

You can see this episode here.

Score. I truly enjoyed this. The Hildegard/Bernanrd relationship sounds really interesting. Are you publishing this bit?

The discussion of the Latin concept of 'homo' was very interesting. A third gender would be an unmarked gender. Hmm.

Yeah, for videocasts.

Why did Bernard support Hildegard, though? As the phrase goes, cui bono?

I seem to remember that there is no he/she pronoun distinction in mandarin Chinese. At least that is what an old friend from Taiwan told me. But I'm not sure if this extends to nouns. Probably not.

So are you saying the Dark Ages really weren't that dark?

As you noted, there is nothing new under the sun and we don't get to be 'modern' and forward-thinking in 2009 without the solid foundation of the past.
Hildegard was quite a woman!
